October 2013 Contest Winners “Cowboy Culture” First place winner, Doug Mutter’s “End of the Trail” cow skull and horse shoe comes from part of his front yard. Doug found the skull 33 years ago in the Colorado Mountains and has been carting it around ever since then, including Alaska cow and back. The thrown horse shoe adds the feeling of an era passed by, an Arizona cow puncher. Doug won second plce in Spetermer with another photo from his front yard. Doug doesn’t travel far to get prized photographs. Camera: Sony DSC-H7, f/4, 1/125 sec, ISO 100, 14.6 mm focal length. Pete Murphy took another second place with a picture taken during a club photo shoot to “Old Tucson” last April. The cowgirl is getting ready to take the harness off of the draft horse after a long afternoon pulling the stage around the town. After her work is done Pete was told she was heading off to the saloon to down a cool one. Camera: Nikon Coolpix P500, f/5.4, 1/320 sec, ISO 160, 31.2 mm focal length (176 mm equivalent in a 35 mm camera). Cathy Leary, a first time place winner, found this display of boots while on a club photo shoot to the Paul Bond Boot factory in Nogales, AZ. Titled “Bucking Bronco” this entry was titled with the particular lone boot in mind, which is seen in the back row right. This caught Cathy’s eye and she was rewarded with a strong third place. The Photography Club mad the trip to the factory in 2012. The factory has literally thousands of patterns to choose from and the custom made boots range in price from $800 to $2,000 depending on material and complexity of design. The bronco design is so quintessentially Arizona. Camera; Canon EOS Digital Reel XSI, f/4, 1/60 sec ISO 400, 28 mm focal length (46.2 mm 35 mm equivalent).
